Leona Van Vaerenbergh is a professor at the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Arts, Department of Applied Linguistics – Translation and Interpreting. She has many years of experience in teaching German language and culture as well as specialised Translation in theory and practice. Her research focusses on expert-layman-communication in written and oral form especially in the field of health care. She headed two projects on optimising patient information leaflets (ABOP and OPTiPIL) and supervises a doctoral thesis on community interpreting in psychiatric hospitals. She is co-editor of trans-kom (Journal of Translation and Technical Communication Research).
